Peer Pressure And Teenage Fashion
You got kids? Mine are all grown up and gone away now but if I cast my mind back oh ten years or so I can remember not only the pressure I was under to comply with their hunger for clothes and accessories that would enable them to keep up with their peer group but also the pressure that I was under to keep up financially.
So where does this come from this desire for the latest cool fashion? Is it immaturity? A lack of independence? Or both.
I remember way back when I was growing up in Brighton (south coast of England) suddenly everyone was wearing Levis to school. Man they were cool, too cool for school! Us lesser types could only stand and stare as these guys promenaded around the place, straight out of Grease. I immediately started bugging my mother for a pair of Levis but unfortunately not only could we not afford Levis we couldn't afford jeans! What was I going to do? I applied the pressure just as today's teenagers do. I remember begging, pleading, whining and perpetually trying to make my case. I was being treated like a nerd at school and nothing could save me. All the while my mum, God bless her, had been saving tokens from Heinz beans to get money off jeans and get me a pair (beans mean jeans?). One Saturday in 1969 she duly presented me with my very own pair of jeans, not Levis, but jeans nonetheless!
The following Monday off I went to school, proudly strutting my stuff. Things didn't go bad, but it could have been better. Although I was recognised as wearing denim (up 3 cred points) it was also noticed that they weren't Levis so I only made it into a kind of sub cool group in the pecking order. Being vain and impressionable though I left behind some of my existing friends and starting hanging out with some of my new cooler ones. Despite all of my mum's efforts to support me we hadn't quite made it. But I learned an important lesson - don't try to be what you're not. The higher I climbed up this 'social ladder' the more shallow the people were, bordering on idiots, and the more I regretted turning away from my old friends. I also felt for my mum who sacrificed herself for my vanity. Never again did I consider 'fashion' until ...
1998, three teenage kids 13, 15 and 18. Guess what?
Anyway, enough reminiscing - to the point: the dictionary definition of peer pressure is this:-
Peer pressure is a term describing the pressure exerted by a peer group in encouraging a person to change their attitude, behavior and/or morals, to conform to, for example, the group's actions, fashion sense, taste in music and television, or outlook on life. Social groups affected include membership groups, when the individual is "formally" a member (for example, a political party or trade union), and social cliques. A person affected by peer pressure may, or may not want to, belong to these groups. They may also recognize dissociative groups with which they would not wish to associate, and thus they behave adversely concerning that group's behaviors.
But does it exist today in terms of clothing? My family has been travelling to the USA for quite some time now and every mall we visit houses stores that are basically designer labels, there don't seem to be many generic clothes shops left. And all the goods seem to be affordable and all the stores packed with kids. Typically the UK has followed the trend and is slowly but surely converting to malls as opposed to high streets and, the stores follow suit, they are all 'names'. I can see the peer pressure trend swinging away from the visual perception of how people look towards dissociative groups, which I think is a fancy term for gangs.
From my experiences as a teenager and a parent I learned these things:
o To yourself be true
o Don't be influenced, perfect a sense of individuality
o The more individual you seem the more others will want to be like you
o Indulge your children but don't spoil them, encourage their sense of self

Play With Your Creative Self
The creative urge lives within us all. It rumbles and bubbles up often like an underwater spring feed stream. When we say YES to the impulse the urge to do something with it, we have already taken the first step in play with our creative self. That my friend is the first practice in becoming more creative and probably the one most overlooked or under valued. The response is to say yes to the urge and watch what happens.
Help your creativity flow by watching and listening for your internal bubbles of brilliance and say yes to keep it flowing.
There is no perfect or magic formula and there are ways to practice. In the spirit of offering you ways to become more in tune with your creative rumbles and be in action around your creativity here are five playful practices to move you closer to your YES.
Set aside time each day to tap into your creative self. Yes, it sort of seems counter intuitive that you would have to schedule creativity time and you do. So mark your calendar and set aside creativity time for yourself each day to make sure that it happens. Write, dream, bake a cake, build a snowman, draw a picture just start somewhere, and tap into the place inside of you that wants to make something new.
Give yourself permission to make a mess and screw up. Oh how many artists could attest to this one? Creativity is messy. Let go of your inner critic and make room for not getting it right. Whatever right is?
Give yourself over to the process. Your inner muse wants to have fun. Let the dance of creativity start and stop and begin again sometime incorporating the mess and sometimes with a new page. There is no perfect answer...just keep trusting your daring spirit inside of you.
Follow YOUR natural instinct to create and play. This often means that you have to tune the outside world out. We can get stuck trying to do the proper thing and follow the guidelines of the outside world and we end up trying too hard to fit in and create some one else's way. This leads to more of the same old same old, how boring. With this sort of response going on we can start to feel tired and bored. Colour outside of the Lines!!
LISTEN to the small nudges that your creative self gives you and respond with a YES. We all have those little nudges and we can tend to dismiss them and not listen or respond. Our inner creativity goddess is always offering up suggestions to how she would like to be in your world.
So when she shows up with a silly idea (who are you to judge) go with it!! Like yesterday when it was minus 40 with the wind chill factor my creative muse said GO BOWLING! I know that she knows how much I crave to be physically active. What a brilliant and fun solution to what the weather was offering me.
LET go of any expectations. This practice makes space for having to get it right. Give that up before you start and see where the process takes you. More importantly tap into your feelings along the way. Are you engaged? Are you having fun? Has time sort of stood still? Is there a smile on your face? Is your body relaxed and enjoying itself too! Is your breathing deep and relaxed? All these are great signs that you have said yes to the process and not to any rigid expectations.
When you fall in love with your own creativity and creativity process the world falls in love with you. YES!

Designer Fashion Dog Collars
Seems like one of the most popular trends of the last decade is high fashion dog collars. Let us get real for a moment, people love their pets, dogs in particular, and they treat them as if they were a member of the family. In some situations the dog is the only other living thing in the house, and the dog gets treated as if it was the first born child. People want to spoil and pamper their pets, and they have been doing this lately with expensive designer dog collars. These are not the ordinary kind of collar you can buy at a dollar store, these collars can cost several hundred dollars. You will not see these expensive items at the local pet store, but they are out there and some of the biggest names in the industry are feeding the market with these expensive items.
We have seen names like Gucci, Chanell, Liz Claiborne, Burberry, and Dooney and Bourke have all come out with their own style of dog collar. Seems as this has become a lucrative market for them, and it is no longer hand bags and accessories that they are offering. Some of these collars cost over five hundred dollars, and there plenty of people who are ready, willing, and able to shell out these big bucks to buy them. The large retail stores will often have these high end collars on display right next to your favorite clutch purses or knee boots. But can you really blame these companies for releasing these pricey items for your pooch? If someone is willing to drop ten bucks for a cup of coffee then why not offer them a fancy fashion collar for their beloved pooch for a couple of hundred bucks.
What is even crazier is that these fashion moguls are releasing matching accessories right along with the collar. For example, you could purchase a hand bag, umbrella, bracelet, or even a scarf to match the gem stoned fashion dog collar you just purchased. The two of you will look splendid, and I am sure you will feel dazzled and the little pooch will not even know the difference! Never mind that, you will have the satisfaction of pampering your beloved dog who craves every moment of your precious attention.
If you are paying big bugs for these fashion collars you can expect that the quality is excellent. Of course, as with anything else, you get what you pay for. The collars that are twenty five dollars and less are not the best made products. But if you are willing to pay six hundred dollars for a Gucci dog collar then rest assured it will be made to last a lifetime for the both of you. There is a middle ground of collars that are priced around fifty bucks that will provide a nice balance between quality and price paid.
There is one line of dog collars that if I were ever to pay that kind of money then I would consider them. The collars made by Coach look like they offer a quality product for around fifty bucks. They seem to be well made and a type of product that is stylish and would last many years. They are the type of collar that will not tear and fray over time, but they are not so stiff as to be uncomfortable for your dog. The Coach collars have very nice hardware on them and they have some room for engraving if you so choose. They have many colors and style to choose from, and if I were to purchase a fashion dog collar this is what I would choose.
